The original TSMHO was started in 1935 by Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith in Akron, Ohio. They adopted the name Alcoholics Anonymous, and published a book by the same name. What began as two persons helping one another with their alcohol use disorder (AUD) has grown to an international organization with over 125,000 meetings and an estimated membership of 2.1 million.
